A horrific incident of animal cruelty has forced the entire country to take notice. On Tuesday, a piece of information surfaced on the internet which stated that a pregnant Elephant was subjected to intense cruelty by some locals. The incident took place in Kerala.

The official of the forest department said that the elephant suffered a painful death after the crackers burst inside her mouth. The incident has sent shockwaves in India. A video had surfaced on the internet in which the elephant was seen in the Velliyar.

“We are savages. Are we not learning? To hear what happened to the elephant in Kerala was heartbreaking. No animal deserves to be treated with cruelty” Sharma tweeted via his official Twitter handle. This is not the first time the Indian limited-overs vice-captain has come and spoken about animal cruelty.

In February 2015, Sharma joined People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) in order to show his support to the sterilisation of homeless cats and dogs. Later that year, the right-handed batsman from Mumbai has joined an anti-poaching campaign in Kenya. The campaign is aimed to save wild animals in the African continent. In 2017, he had revealed that he has opened a line-up of merchandise whose profits will go to animal charities.

The Indian cricket team captain and Sharma’s teammate, Virat Kohli also voiced his opinion on the incident on Wednesday. Kohli called it as a cowardly act in the tweet. He wrote on Twitter, “Appalled to hear about what happened in Kerala. Let’s treat our animals with love and bring an end to these cowardly acts.”
