‘I literally wanted to kill them’: Sreesanth reminiscences, his spell against Australia in T20I World Cup 2007

Like every other seamer, former Indian pacer, S Sreesanth, was widely popular for his animated celebrations on the cricket field during his playing days. He was often seen getting involved in verbal spats with opponent players, especially the Aussie batsmen. In fact, Sreesanth shares a history of tongue-lashing with Australians.

One such instance took place in the 2007 T20 World Cup semi-final against the Kangaroos. He performed outstandingly well in that match. Sreesanth”s aggression and enthusiasm was the pick of the performances. He took wickets at crucial intervals and made sure his side registers a victory against the mighty Aussies studded with star batsmen. Sree finished with 2/12, and it was the best performance in the game.

But why did Sreesanth showed that much passion during the semi-final clash? Well, the Kerala speedster recently recalled India’s famous World Cup triumph in 2007 and revealed why he exhibited extreme aggression against the Aussies.

While speaking to the Cow Corner Chronicles, Sreesanth said that he used to get so annoyed with Australia for the way they defeated India in the 2003 World Cup.

“I remember getting hit for a four off the first ball when I tried to bowl a yorker to Hayden. If you see that match, I was running with a lot of passion. I just wanted Australia to be defeated. The way they defeated India in the 2003 World Cup, that was always there in my head. I want to kill them literally,” said Sreesanth.

Fans still remember Sreesanth”s magnificent spell and his unique celebration of puffing the dust off the pitch from his both hands after sending Matthew Hayden’s stump for a walk. He admitted that it was his best spell ever in his career. The 37-year-old expressed his gratitude towards God that he got a chance to play the match for India.

“I used to get so angry at Australians. I am so proud, and God has been extremely kind that one match everybody talks about is that match. The best I have bowled for my country is that match. I had bowled a lot of dot balls. I remember I had gone for two fours and overall went for just 12 runs,” added Sreesanth.
