India’s Opener Rohit Sharma reveals he has to pass ‘the Yo-Yo Test’ to resume cricket with the Indian team

The ‘Yo-Yo Test’ became quite a popular topic of discussion since it was imposed by the BCCI to tests the fitness of the players in their bid for a place in the national side.

The likes of Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina, earlier, faced the snub after failing ‘ the ‘Yo-Yo Test’. It was reported that the arduous drill was aced by the likes of Manish Pandey, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja with scores above 21.

The Yo-Yo Test, which came into the foray due to the new scheme initiated by captain Kohli in Indian cricket, which concentrated on cricketers achieving supreme fitness.

The test is also part of the training drills of the top cricketing nations such as England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

The minimum score required to pass the hurdle of the fitness test was 16. Now, even the Indian vice-captain Rohit Sharma has to evidence his fitness by undergoing the ‘Yo-Yo Test’, if and when the international cricket finally resumes in the near future.

During the fifth and final T20I against New Zealand earlier this year, Rohit suffered a hamstring injury which made him miss the subsequent ODI and Test series.

Rohit was all set to make his comeback into competitive cricket with Mumbai Indians (MI) for the thirteenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), scheduled to commence on March 29.

However, the tournament was suspended indefinitely with the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic. Not only IPL, but all the top sporting events were also either abandoned or postponed due to the fatal virus.

Things have only gone worse for athletes as they are confined to limited space amid lockdown.

“Before the lockdown happened, I was almost ready to play. That whole week was going to be my fitness test, but that’s when the lockdown happened, and I had to push back everything now. Once everything opens up, I have first to give my fitness test, and once I pass the fitness test I will be allowed to go and resume my duties with the team,” Rohit told Joe Morrison, during his online interaction on The Liga’s Facebook page.
