Darren Sammy, the former West Indies skipper, was part of the IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad in year 2013 and 2014. During his stay at the Hyderbad camp, Sammy was allegedly called ‘Kalu’ by his teammates as stated by him.
The West Indies batsman recently stated that he didn’t know the exact meaning of ‘Kalu’ and he thought that word was used to uplift the team’s spirit as everyone around laughs whenever that word is used.
However, Sammy came to know the exact meaning of the word recently and he came up with an Instagram story where a few of SRH teammates called him with that word.
The WI Star, on Sunday, came up with an Instagram post and demanded an apology from his ex-teammates for the same.
In his long Instagram post, Sammy mentioned that the players, who called him Kalu, should come forward and say sorry to him.
“I was listening to Hasan Minhaj talking about how some of the people in culture describe Black people. It doesn’t apply to everybody, but I see this because of something I experienced. I said I was angry when I heard him describing the word. It was seen not in a good way, it was degrading,” Sammy said in his Instagram post.
“I’ve always been one to build up the team – not bring it down. All those who called me that, you guys know yourself. Some of you have my numbers, my Instagram and Twitter. Let’s have a conversation. If it was in the way Minhaj meant, I am disappointed. I’m angry and I deserve an apology. Talk to me, reach out to me,” he went on to add.
Ishant Sharma’s old Instagram post from 2014 with Sammy is trending
After Sammy’s latest Instagram post went viral, his ex-teammate Ishant Sharma‘s old Instagram post went viral, in which, the Indian pacer wrote, “Me, bhuvi, kaluu and gun sunrisers.” In the post, it can be clearly seen that the Indian quick called Sammy as Kalu. Going by this old post, it can be confirmed that there was racial discrimination in the SRH camp.
With Ishant’s post going viral, it should be seen if the pacer comes out and apologizes to the West Indies all-rounder or not.
We can also expect an official statement from the SRH franchise to settle the issue as soon as possible.
Sammy “Kallu” has played 22 matches in the cash-rich league IPL scoring 295 runs at a strike-rate of 122.41 and also picked 11 Wickets.
