It’s almost been a year since MS Dhoni last took the cricket field. It was during the 2019 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand where he was run out. Martin Guptill threw down the stumps and dashed India’s hopes of qualifying for the final of the mega event in England and Wales. From there on, the veteran went on a sabbatical and has missed quite a few series.

There have been plenty of talks over his comeback, but nothing concrete came to the fore. Reports of him being injured also came to the fore, but they weren’t confirmed. When he was on a break, the 38-year-old went on to serve the Indian Army in the Kashmir Valley. A number of experts have had their say on what the Jharkhand-born should do going ahead in the future.

MS Dhoni in the twilight of his career

In July, Dhoni is set to turn 39 and it goes without saying that he’s at the fag end of his glorious career. Even his parents and childhood coach, Keshav Banerjee, had their opinions on Dhoni’s plans. During this while, India groomed the likes of Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson for the keeper’s slot. However, it’s KL Rahul, who has been donning the keeping gloves of late.

Dhoni was set to take part in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), representing three-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK). He also attended a practice session where he scored a century and conjured praises from his teammates. But to his dismay, the tournament has now been deferred for an indefinite period of time due to the coronavirus outbreak.

He was also said to be in contention for the T20 World Cup in Australia. In the meantime, Dhoni’s fans aren’t happy by the speculations of him hanging his boots. On Wednesday, May 27, the hashtag #DhoniRetires trended on Twitter for quite some time.

Then, Sakshi Dhoni also dropped a scathing tweet, though she later deleted it. Now Dhoni’s supporters have come up with another hashtag #DhoniNeverTires in support of him. Even his IPL franchise CSK joined in to support Dhoni.

Here’s how the fans reacted over Dhoni:
