T20 World Cup’s likely postponement could help BCCI conduct the IPL: Mark Taylor

Mark Taylor, the former Australian cricketer, reckons that it’s tough for the upcoming T20 World Cup to go ahead as per schedule. The veteran feels that at the present point in time where there are travel restrictions due to the global pandemic situation, holding 45 matches over seven venues would be a daunting task.

The COVID-19 has put to halt most cricket tournament around the globe from the month of March and there’s no update on when situation would normalise. In the meantime, Taylor, believes that it could be a chance for the Board of Control for Cricket in India to host the Indian Premier League (IPL).

“I think that’s the most likely scenario (postponement of T20 World Cup) because 15 teams planning to come to Australia between October and November, 45 matches over a proposed seven venues, national travel is going to extremely difficult in the world we are living in,” Taylor was quoted as saying in Channel Nine Sports.

“14 days isolation before that makes it even harder. More than likely that event is not going ahead. So, if the ICC decides to postpone the event that will open the door for the BCCI to say that we will have our IPL is India which actually puts the onus back on individuals then rather than nations moving whole teams over to a certain country,” he added.

The IPL was earlier scheduled to take place from March 29. However, it had to be postponed until April 15. But after PM Narendra Modi extended the lockdown until May 3, the IPL had to be deferred for an indefinite time period.

If reports are to be believed, the BCCI has received offers from Sri Lanka Cricket and the UAE to host the tournament. If the cash-rich event doesn’t take place, the BCCI and the other personnel, involved with the tournament, are set to incur massive losses.

Even the players could end up getting pay-cuts. Sourav Ganguly, the BCCI president, earlier said that there won’t be any cricket in the near future. Fir the time being, it remains to be seen how things pan out.
